TASH & NÉNÉ : HEIRESSES TO THE GROOVE (2023) | DOCU-PERFORMANCE

In this 40-minute performance-documentary, Natasha “Tash” Jean-Bart and Nubian Néné share the story of their personal and artistic journey through hip-hop culture and its embodied rhythms. From Montreal North to Côte-des-Neiges, via the metropolises of New York and Las Vegas, the two artists approach dance by focusing on its social and political force, in open-hearted interviews whose considerations go far beyond the practice of dance. 

Punctuated by electrifying performances and documentary footage shot in Sainte-Anne-des-Monts as part of the 2nd edition of Mandoline Hybride’s hip-hop event, this docu-performance pays tribute to two great figures of Quebec dance. They share their passion, accompanied by Val d’Espoir DJ Nokturn and Montreal MC and breaker Sovann Rochon-Prom Tep.

Nubian Néné / New York

Née à Montréal et basée à New York, Nubian Néné est une danseuse/chorégraphe qui tisse les ‘Street & Club Dance’ pour créer son style unique et captivant. Ses racines haïtiennes l’aide à forger une éthique de travail assidu et une résilience incomparable, qui lui permettent de se développer en tant que productrice, directrice artistique, artiste visuel, enseignante et commissaire. Elle est un atout pour le collectif multidisciplinaire montréalais FRGMNT. Encouragée, supportée et inspirée par ses mentors, Nubian Néné est invitée à identifier ses repères culturels, à être engagée et en communauté, et à travers la pédagogie et l’événementiel aider à conserver le patrimoine de la communauté du ‘Street & Club Dance’. En 2022, elle présente sa première installation d’art visuel Signature Verses Liberation. Une ode à l’architecture, la danse et le dessin, une preuve d’harmonie, un contexte hybride, un amalgame de textures, de couches et de motifs, examiné et imaginé selon l’artiste. Elle est la créatrice de Waack Bazaar, de The Essence Experience, de Glasses & Laces et de A Lady in The House Dance Company.

Natasha « Tash » Jean-Bart / Las Vegas

Born in Montreal in 1971, Natasha Jean-Bart’s career spans over 37 years in the performing arts. She is an artist, writer, dancer, choreographer, teacher and consultant in street dance and intergenerational hip-hop. Her credits as a performer and choreographer have taken her to some highly respected stages, including Cirque du Soleil’s The Beatles – LOVE, as the main character and coach for locking and hip-hop rehearsals. She currently performs with the Canadian Bboyizm Dance Company. Her expertise has earned her numerous international positions as a judge for elite dance competitions, she also gives workshops and lectures internationally. In addition, she uses her voice to help and inspire artists from all walks of life to find their purpose. As a wife, mother of four beautiful children and grandmother of five lively grandchildren, Natasha divides her time between her hometown of Las Vegas, Canada, and the rest of the world

DJ Monsieur Nokturn / Val d’Espoir

Mr. Nokturn is a Val d’Espoir based artist who has been active in the Quebec music scene for over 10 years as a performer and mediator. He is also the main DJ of Q-052, having taken part in the anti-colonial WAKE UP THE WORLD tour in 2019. While electronic diversity is becoming more and more prevalent each year on the nightlife scene, Mr. Nokturn prioritizes ancient art. By mixing classical melodies and underground laments, the artist delivers performances that are both classical and spectacular. Dance, culture, commitment and anarchism are the main elements of his practice. To the sound of his music, the dancefloor becomes a unique social experience.

Sovann Rochon-Prom Tep / Montréal

Sovann Rochon-Prom Tep, alias Promo baigne dans le milieu du hip hop depuis son enfance. Il se joint au groupe Sweet Technique, avec lequel il participe à de nombreuses compétitions de breaking et se perfectionne au fil des années. Il cumule à ce jour plus d’une trentaine de victoires et est régulièrement invité à participer à des compétitions autour du monde, parfois à titre de participant, parfois à titre de juge. Passionné par la maîtrise du corps, il entreprend une formation à l’École de danse contemporaine de Montréal, dont il sortira diplômé en 2015. Depuis sa sortie, il a travaillé avec Animals Of Distinction, Wants & Needs, Castel_Blast, le Groupe RUBBERBANDance, 14 lieux, Lilith & Cie et Susanna Hood. Désireux de poursuivre sa recherche artistique, Sovann raffine son approche de la danse à travers ses propres créations et les différents ateliers qu’il enseigne. Aujourd’hui membre de Lorganisme, il met sur pied plusieurs projets de création scénique mettant en scène des artistes de diverses communautés artistiques : Un temps pour tout (2019) – présentée à La Chapelle, Festival TransAmériques, festival Furies, Musée d’Art de Rouyn-Noranda – et Sam & Angèle (2022).
