WALDO & 99: RISING FIGURES OF STREET DANCES (2024) – DOCU-PERFORMANCE

In this 26-minute performance-documentary intermingling interviews and dance sequences, Walid Hammani and Gaëlle Fabre share their artistic journeys and explain what brought them to dance in the first place. The two rising professional artists position themselves in a milieu marked by a generation of high-caliber performers and the hope of continuing their lineage by adding their own personal touch!

Punctuated by electrifying performances and documentary footage shot in Sainte-Anne-des-Monts as part of the 3rd edition of Mandoline Hybride’s Hip-Hop event, this docu-performance presents lesser-known facets of Montreal’s rising talent in today’s Hip-Hop community, and promises to inspire young people who wish to surpass themselves through movement, community and an openness to the world!

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Walid ‘Waldo’ Hammani | Montreal
Walid Hammani, aka ‘Waldo’, has been involved in street dance since a very young age. Initially attracted to electro, he took part in the development of this dance in Canada and twice represented the country at the Vertifight international competition in France. He then branched out into different styles, winning numerous All Styles battles across Canada. Now dedicated to popping, Waldo is gaining international recognition and has been invited to several large-scale events in Europe, the United States and Asia. He represents Funky By Nature, an intergenerational collective of dancers very active in the Montreal community, characterized by a freestyle, groove-based approach rooted in tradition. Gaëlle ’99’ Fabre | Montreal
Gaëlle Fabre aka ’99’ develops her dance with the Montreal-based group GEM.IN.I. As a hip-hop dancer, she is very active on the battles circuit in Quebec. In particular, she won the Kairos battle, which earned her an invitation to the finals of the prestigious Battle Bad in Paris in 2022. In 2023, she was invited to the Battle Sama Street Vibe in Dakar. Gaëlle also performs on stage in Katya Montaignac’s Sacrer, presented at the Agora de la danse in Montreal. She then presented a short solo choreographed as part of the 10Llux Festival’s Open Body event. Photo credit: Seyna Rose

DJ Nokturn | Val d’Espoir

Nokturn is a Val d’Espoir-based artist who has been active in the Quebec music scene for over 10 years as a performer and mediator. He is also Q-052’s main DJ, having taken part in the WAKE UP THE WORLD anti-colonial tour in 2019. While electronic diversity is becoming more and more apparent on the nightlife scene every year, Nokturn prioritizes ancient art. Blending classical melodies and underground laments, the artist delivers performances that are both classic and spectacular. Dance, culture, commitment and anarchism are the main elements of his practice. To the sound of his music, the dancefloor becomes a unique social experience. Photo credit: Maxime Caron

Sovann Rochon-Prom Tep | Montreal

Sovann Rochon-Prom Tep, aka Promo, has been immersed in hip hop since childhood. He joined the group Sweet Technique, with whom he took part in numerous breaking competitions, perfecting his skills over the years. To date, he has racked up over thirty victories and is regularly invited to take part in competitions around the world, either as a participant or judge. Passionate about body control, he began training at EDCM, graduating in 2015. Since graduating, he has worked with Animals Of Distinction, Wants & Needs, Castel_Blast, RUBBERBANDance, 14 lieux, Lilith & Cie and others. Keen to pursue his artistic research, Sovann refines his approach to dance through his own creations and the various workshops he teaches. Today, as a member of Lorganisme, he is developing a number of stage creation projects featuring artists from various artistic communities: “Un temps pour tout” (2019) and “Sam & Angèle” (2022).
