A podcast produced as part of the 4th edition of Salon58’s Feminist Writing Retreat

About the podcast

Artists from different regions of Quebec gathered in Marsoui as part of the 4th Feminist Writing Retreat in Salon58, in April 2024. This event enabled the organization of intergenerational encounters between participants⸱e⸱s of the Retreat and women of different ages, based in and around Marsoui.

Conversations intergénérationnelles is an incursion into the heart of human-scale exchanges divided into 4 40-minute episodes. Each episode tackles a different theme: rurality, relationships, work and the media.

Territory acknowledgment and positioning

These conversations were held in unceded Mi’gmaq territory, in the 7th District of Mig’magi, Gespe’gewa’gi. The people who speak are largely of colonial descent, others are Afrodescendant and the origins of some are sometimes multiple. The participants wish to recognize the responsibility of sharing discourses thoughtfully in the public space, as well as the need to put into practice strategies aimed at decolonizing gestures and thoughts.

Episode 1: Rurality. In this first episode, we share our experiences and views on life in the regions. What separates rural and urban lifestyles? What brings them together? We share our thoughts on access to services, anonymity and cultural diversity. These stories reveal, in filigree, the depth of the ties we forge with the territories.

Episode 2: Relationships. How do we build our interpersonal relationships? What place do we give to the bonds that transform us? This second episode looks at friendships, chosen families and intimate relationships. We question different relational models, the possibility of cultivating intergenerational ties as well as the care we take of ourselves and others through these plural connections that have the power to embody our political reflections on a daily basis.

Episode 3: Work. In this third episode, we explore our relationship with work. How does our perception of work evolve throughout our lives? What career-related challenges do we face? What are our desires and aspirations? Have we had to reconcile work with family or artistic life? This conversation leads us to question the uneven visibility and valuation of work, exploring the spectrum that unfolds from burnout to the full flowering of our productive forces.

Episode 4: Media. Tracing the genealogy of the different media that have crossed our lives, from the emergence of the telephone to the democratization of the Internet and social networks, we look at the role of the evolution of information and communication technologies on the future of society. How do new media influence our interpersonal relationships? Do we still cherish traditional modes of communication, such as epistolary exchanges? This latest episode of the Intergenerational Conversations podcast is a foray into those institutions that manufacture our political representations of the social world.
